Group Therapy

Group therapy can be an effective and cost-effective form of treatment for some people.

We currently offer the following group therapy programs:

DBT Skills Group Program

This group is an introduction to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). The program will cover the four modules of Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

  • Mindfulness focuses on acceptance and being present in the moment.

  • Distress tolerance encourages a person to learn to tolerate negative emotions rather than trying to escape from them.

  • Emotion regulation offers strategies to manage intense emotions and how to change them over time.

  • Interpersonal effectiveness encourages communication with others in a way that maintains self-respect, is assertive and strengthens relationships.

This course is recommended for individuals who have been diagnosed with trauma, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders, eating disorders or chronic depression.

Duration: Weekly group sessions run over 10 weeks, 1.5 hours each session.

Managing Anxiety and Depression Group Program

This group is recommended for individuals who have been experiencing either anxiety, depression or a combination of both. The group is based on principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Through the course, you will learn strategies to combat anxiety and depression, and gain a deeper understanding of the role of thoughts and beliefs in influencing our emotions.

Mindfulness Group Program

This group is recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about, and develop their practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the ability to be fully aware of the present moment, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness has been shown to be an effective treatment option for many mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD and substance use.

Building Self-Esteem Group Program

This group is recommended for individuals who experience low self esteem, or a highly critical of themselves. This group is based on Cognitive Behaviour principles, designed to build up the healthy, confident part of ourselves, and reduce the “inner critic”. Through the course, you will learn a range of strategies and exercises to combat the “inner critic”, reduce internal self judgement, and build up self confidence and self esteem. We are running this course separately, for adults and for children.

Overcoming Addiction Group Program

This group is for people who have decided to enter recovery from addiction. We accommodate people with addictions of all kinds (substances and behavioural addictions). This group welcomes people at all stages of recovery and sobriety. Throughout the course, participants will learn ways to manage urges and cravings, build distress tolerance skills, and prevent relapse. We also address common underlying feelings of anxiety, guilt and shame. This group program is based on CBT and DBT approaches to treatment for addiction.

Cool Kids Group Program

This group is for children and adolescents who are experiencing anxiety. Anxiety is the most common mood concern for young people, and the research is clear that early intervention can be very effective. The program is based on a Cognitive Behavioural approach to therapy, and addresses ways to manage anxiety, overcome fears and challenge unhelpful patterns of thinking.
